Summary New Testament From a Jewish Point of View Class - 6/20/2022
As usual, our class was a blast! Jo Ann, Dan, Karen, Robin, Randy, Odette, David, Dave, Norky, Jenny, Merill, and Jay attended. It was Jay’s first time and we were so glad to have him and we were glad to have Jenny back.
After our usual opening of Give Me That Old Time Religion with Dan leading us in that song, we read the introduction to Galatians.
Give me that old-time religion, Give me that old-time religion, Give me that old-time religion, It’s good enough for me! If it was good enough for Moses, it is good enough for me! If it was good enough for the Hebrew Children, it is good enough to for me!
Immediately, after reading the introduction to Galatians in the Jewish Annotated New Testament, many of us got quite upset since we learned that Paul seemed to think the Torah was erased and no longer God’s word and that Judaism was now null and void. David mentioned that Galatians may be the most anti-Semitic book in the New Testament. Robin stated that she sees the roots of anti-Semitism in this book.
Randy told us about an amazing program that is going on every Thursday night that addressed anti-semitism at the Long Beach Jewish Community Center and posted an email address dschneider@alpertjcc.org. If anyone wants to participate email Dana Schneider.
Randy stated: I think we found our first anti-Semite. (Paul)
Jo Ann remembered a friend’s husband’s father who was Jewish, but married and gentile and told his children to never reveal their Jewish roots, but also became anti-semitic.
Robin stated that she didn’t think that Jesus talked of anti-Jewish teachings as Paul did.
Merill asked what Messianic Judaism is. David explained that many Messianic Jews may be former Baptists, but Messianic Judaism combines Jewish symbols and teaching with Christianity. .
Jay read us a definition from the web that describes the Jews for Jesus organization. Jo Ann explained that not all Messianic Jews are part of the Jews for Jesus organization and that messianic congregations vary.
We remembered Odette’s experience of non-kosher food being eaten at a messianic congregation she visited. Jo Ann thought that maybe non-kosher food is okay at a messianic congregation since the “law” had been erased with Jesus.
Jo Ann will email the group the article on Messianic Judaism that is in the Jewish Annotated New Testament.
The Misheberach Prayer - The Jewish Prayer For Healing |
At the end of our study, before we visited with one another again as we did before the study, we sang the Misheberach Jewish prayer of healing together and we didn’t sound too bad since Jo Ann put the words to the prayer on the screen.
