Summary of New Testament From Jewish Point of View Class - January 30, 2023

Our class was as lively and as fun as always!  Jo Ann, Dan, Ruth, Dave, Karen, Odette, Merrill, Norky, Neil, and Diann attended.  We missed Steve, David, Randy, Robin, Jessica, Kim, Patricia, and Jay and a few others that attend once in a while. Below is a summary written by Dan of what we discussed: We read Revelation chapters 21 and 22, and finished the book of Revelation. Jo Ann brought to our attention how part of the passage comprise part of the Hallelujah Chorus from Handel’s’ Messiah. This passage describes the revelation of the new heaven and new earth, and the idea of eternity in a New Jerusalem where God and the Lamb (Jesus)  dwell with humankind. Forever. A couple of points: 1. The New Jerusalem lacks a temple, saying that the presence of God and the Lamb will be in place of the temple. This contrasts with the Book of Ezekiel, which describes a temple in the world to come. According to the Annotated New Testament some Christian interpreters say this is because Jesus has fulf

We had a smaller group than usual since Randy and Robin, David, and Steve could not attend, but we still had a good time studying together.  Jo Ann was “on the road,” but was able to open up the Zoom room and facilitate our study from her car!   Jo Ann, Dan, Odette, Ruth, Karen, Dave, Neil, and Merrill attended.  It was Neil’s first time at our group and it was great having him there and hearing his input.  We hope he returns again. Below is a summary, written by Dan, of what went on: We studied Revelation chapters 19 and 20. We all appreciate Dave reading the chapters for us. So, in these chapters we see the happy ending of the story, as long as your name is written in the Book of Life. This is distinct from the book of life that is opened and closed at the high holidays, which is in regard to those who will life and die during the coming year. Celebration of the wedding of the Lamb is contrasted with the judgement of everyone according to “what they have done”.  Next week, the End of

I apologize for forgetting to post this summary until 1/22/2023, but I was traveling and writing up the summary got delayed. We had quite a good group: Jo Ann, Dan, Steve, Merrill, Robin, Randy, David, Dave, Ruth, and Jessica attended. Below is a summary of what went on written by Dan: By the way John = John of Patmos Revelation chapter 16 tells of the event called the pouring out of the seven bowls of God’s wrath, which are poured onto the earth which bring plagues like the plagues that God brought on Egypt in the Book of Exodus.  In chapter 17 John sees the Whore of Babylon which David said any educated person of this time would know is the city of Rome.  The commentary talked of John’s preoccupation with sexual purity and how the Whore of Babylon was the inverse of Jewish sexual purity. To put it politely.  Robin spoke of John’s problem with women in general and of a prophetess who was part of the church of Thyatira in particular, suggesting that he may have been jealous of her. Dan, Jo Ann, Steve, Karen, Dave, Jay, Robin, Randy, and David attended our first study together in 2023. For those who missed our meeting today January 9, 2023, you missed Revelation chapters 13 and 14, some of the most renowned portions of the book of Revelation and of the New Testament. David aptly described the passage as written LSD.  We had a lively discussion, wide ranging as usual. Here is a brief summary of chapters 13 and 14: Chapter 13 and 14 cast of characters includes: 1. The Red Dragon (Satan) 2. The first beast with multiple heads, horns and blasphemous things written on its heads (?) (the Antichrist) 3. The second beast looking like a lamb but talking like the dragon who performs miracles in the presence of the first beast, like Pharaoh’s court magicians  (popularly know as the false prophet). 4. The Saints (who are about to be persecuted and killed) 5. Everyone else on earth who are headed for a much more terrible fate. 6. The Book of Life 7. The “image” of the first be
