I haven’t been the best at putting these summaries together weekly, so below are summaries, written by Dan, covering the past three weeks: April 17, 2023 (Unfortunately Dan didn’t put together a summary for that week.) April 24, 2023 We studied the second chapter of 2Peter last Monday. Much of the chapter was devoted to warnings against false prophets. As is usual we had a wide ranging discussion, noting the many references to Tanach in describing these people. Unfortunately, we don’t know who these people were, what they taught or anything. It can be noted that opposing schools of Christian thought at that time routinely accused each other of immorality. We have completed the New Testament, so we will begin studying the gospels again but read all four at the same time since many in this class did not ever study the gospels or Acts. Below is a summary written by Dan of what went on last Monday, October 9, 2023: “We did it, finished reading the letter to Philemon and with it the entire New Testament. Thanks to Dave who told us we began reading it over three years ago. Spent most of our time this week talking about slavery, in ancient times and more recent too. We were against it, if you want to know. It was kind of nice having a letter this short, just one chapter. Nicer still, it was not someone complaining about what some person was teaching that was wrong. Instead, it was personal, a request for Philemon to free a slave who evidently had run away from him. As usual, our class was a blast! Jo Ann, Dan, Karen, Robin, Randy, Odette, David, Dave, Norky, Jenny, Merill, and Jay attended. It was Jay’s first time and we were so glad to have him and we were glad to have Jenny back. After our usual opening of Give Me That Old Time Religion with Dan leading us in that song, we read the introduction to Galatians. Give me that old-time religio n, Give me that old-time religion , Give me that old-time religion , It’s good enough for me! If it was good enough for Moses, it is good enough for me! If it was good enough for the Hebrew Children, it is good enough to for me! Immediately, after reading the introduction to Galatians in the Jewish Annotated New Testament, many of us got quite upset since we learned that Paul seemed to think the Torah was erased and no longer God’s word and that Judaism was now null and void.
