Summary of New Testament From a Jewish Point of View Class - 11/14/2022

We had another class where Dan and Jo Ann were physically together in Long Beach.  After class, some of the class members who were in Long Beach met at The Library Coffee House, but via Zoom when we studied together Jo Ann, Dan, Steve, Karen, Dave, Norky, David, Robin, Randy, Odette, Ruth, Merrill, and Kim attended.  It was Ruth’s first time joining us and we were delighted to have her with us.

Dan gave us a summary of what was in the introduction to Revelation which we studied the week before.

A very lively discussion occurred next!

Below is a summary, written by Dan of what went on after he summarized what we studied the week before:

Summary by Dan Farris of Revelation chapter 1

We began studying the first chapter of the book of Revelation, reading a book unlike any other in the New Testament. The first chapter set the scene of a man named John (John of Patmos, not the Apostle John who was Jesus’ disciple) on an island off of what we call Turkey, having a vision of “one like the son of man” (Jesus) who told him to write down his vision and to send it to the seven churches that are in Asia (Minor, now Turkey). A message from Jesus to be sent by this John to these seven churches. The only physical description of Jesus in the New Testament follows: hair like wool or snow, eyes like blazing fire, face like the sun, feet like bronze glowing in a furnace. A sword came out of his mouth (?) Voice like a trumpet, like rushing waters.  Must have been easier to talk after getting the sword out.

Some interesting questions came from our group like “what does ‘firstborn of the dead’” mean? Someone answered that Jesus is the first person resurrected from the dead to stay that way.

Interesting sights in this verbal picture book:

Seven lamps (blazing) = 7 churches
Seven stars = 7 angels of 7 churches mentioned above
Keys of death and Hades (are they labeled “do not duplicate?”)

I predict this will be an interesting study.
